On 19 October 2022, Riccione will turn 100 as an autonomous municipality
The origins of Riccione
- In the III century a. C. the area was colonized by the Romans.
- In 1260, Riccione became a medieval village, with the settlement of the Florentine family: the Agolanti, of which the remains of the castle remain on the hills of Riccione.
- Towards the middle of the 19th century, the rise of Riccione begins, thanks to the birth of rural sea tourism. The inhabitants are about 1800, most of them are farmers. A few decades later, Riccione becomes a tourist resort known throughout Italy and Europe.
- Riccione at that time was almost totally dependent on Rimini.
- An important event that contributed to the autonomy of Riccione was the construction of the railway in 1862, which allowed the city to be reached from other locations.
- The people of Riccione began to host in their own homes the first scrofulous children who came to be treated in Riccione. The reception was a success and in less than a year, the first historical entrepreneurs of Riccione built the first real hospices.
- In 1895 the activity of the first lifeguards began, thanks to the first state-owned concessions.
- In 1901 the first hotel in Riccione was inaugurated.
- Maria Boorman Ceccarini contributed considerably to the development of the city, financing for the reconstruction of the canal port, for the construction of the kindergarten for children and the hospital. In 1912, the most famous avenue of the city was named after Maria Ceccarini.
Riccione becomes an autonomous municipality
In 1910 a petition was written by the people of Riccione, to be recognized as an autonomous municipality. On 19 October 1922 Riccione finally becomes an autonomous municipality. From 1926 to 1943 the Mussolini family chose Riccione as their holiday destination. 1934 Mussolini buys a villa, which today has become a museum open to the public.
In the 1950s, the famous trendy clubs were born. With the boom of mass tourism, Riccione becomes a popular and popular seaside resort. In the following years, with the construction of the Adriatic motorway and the activation of numerous flights over the Rimini airport, in the mid-1960s, the number of visitors increased.
