The Queen’s Museum of Cattolica – Where Archaeology Meets the Sea
A hidden gem between art and the Adriatic
Located in the heart of Cattolica’s old town, along the ancient Via Flaminia, the Museo della Regina ("Queen’s Museum") is the city’s civic museum. It offers a journey through time, connecting archaeological treasures and seafaring traditions.
A historic home
The museum is housed in what was once the "Pilgrims’ Hospital", built in the late 1500s. These same walls once offered shelter, food, and rest to travelers.
Restored in 2000 with Jubilee funds, the building now stands as a cultural landmark in Cattolica.
Two sections, one story
The museum is divided into two thematic sections:
Archaeology: Objects from excavations since the 1960s, including remarkable finds from a Bronze Age village (1800–1500 BCE) discovered in 2007.
Ethno-anthropology (Maritime Culture): The first of its kind in Emilia-Romagna. It explores life among the “people of the sea”: from the birth of the port and shipbuilding traditions to fishing techniques, religious rituals, and the shift to motorized boats in the 1920s.
A living cultural space
The museum is more than exhibits: it’s a dynamic cultural center. It hosts school workshops, family labs, historical boat gatherings, artistic residencies, immersive soundscapes, and more.
In 2025, for its 25th anniversary, it celebrated with concerts, events, and interactive installations that honored the town’s collective memory.
