In the heart of the enchanting medieval village of Santarcangelo di Romagna lies a museum that is much more than a display of antiques: it's a living narrative of the culture, labor, and daily life of the Romagna people. The MET – Museum of the Traditions and Customs of the People of Romagna, inaugurated in 1981, offers visitors an immersive experience into the deep roots of Southern Romagna.

Origins and mission
The museum was born from the efforts of a group of volunteers and ethnographer Giuseppe Sebesta. In 1989, with regional support, it found its home in the town’s former slaughterhouse, transformed into an educational and cultural space.

With twelve thematic sections, the MET narrates the rituals, trades, symbols, dialect, and daily practices of Romagna’s past—always with a contemporary lens.

Key exhibition areas

  • “And I’ll Tell You Who You Are”: family life and community traditions, with historical clothing, everyday utensils, dialect references, and recipes.

  • “Between Warp and Weft”: the journey of fabric—from spinning to weaving—with antique looms.

  • “Iron and Fire”: dedicated to local craftsmanship, with tools for blacksmithing, metalwork, and piadina baking.

  • The Mill: showcasing flour production techniques from ancient stones to mechanical mills.

Special mention goes to the installations “Cumuli e Digressioni”, metaphoric monuments bridging memory and present.

Folklore & Puppets
One special area is dedicated to the Salici Puppet Company, a historic legacy from the 1800s. The collection includes 52 handmade figures, including Arlecchino, Brighella, and Captain—each dressed in fine velvet, silk, and trims.
